Qué hace un Senior Software Engineer

What senior software engineers actually do

A senior software engineer's day looks different from an IC2 or IC3 role in ways that matter. You're not just shipping features—you're responsible for the health and evolution of non-trivial systems. That might mean owning a payment processing pipeline, a real-time data platform, or a critical microservice that hundreds of engineers depend on.

The work breaks into a few overlapping domains. First, there's the technical ownership piece: you design systems with an eye toward scalability, fault tolerance, and operational simplicity. You make calls about whether to build, buy, or refactor. You understand the trade-offs between a quick solution and one that won't collapse under load in six months. When a system fails at 2 a.m., you're either on the incident response or you've built it well enough that it doesn't.

Second, there's the multiplier effect. You mentor mid-level engineers, unblock them, and raise the bar through thoughtful code review. You help shape how your team thinks about problems. This isn't a separate job—it's baked into how you work. A good senior engineer makes the people around them better.

Third, there's the judgment call: architecture decisions that ripple across teams. Should we migrate to Kubernetes or stay on managed services? Do we own this data pipeline or partner with another team? What's the right level of abstraction here? These decisions often have no perfect answer, and part of the role is making them with incomplete information, then living with the consequences.

The skill set that matters

The technical foundation is solid. Most senior roles expect fluency in at least one of the primary languages: **TypeScript**, **Python**, or **Go**. TypeScript dominates in frontend-heavy and full-stack contexts; Python is standard in data, ML, and backend work; Go is common in infrastructure, DevOps, and systems-level work. You don't need to be expert in all three, but you should be able to reason about code in any of them.

Database and infrastructure skills are non-negotiable. **PostgreSQL** remains the default relational database for most teams, and you should understand indexing, query planning, and when to denormalize. **AWS** is the de facto cloud platform—you need to know compute, storage, networking, and how to think about cost and reliability. **Kubernetes** has become the orchestration standard for containerized workloads; if your company runs on it, you need to understand deployments, networking, storage, and debugging.

But the real differentiator is **system design** and **distributed systems** thinking. This is where seniority lives. Can you reason about consistency models, failure modes, and trade-offs between strong and eventual consistency? Do you understand how to design for observability, not just functionality? Can you estimate capacity, identify bottlenecks, and know when to optimize versus when to leave well enough alone?

The softer skills matter too, though they're harder to list: clear communication, especially in writing; comfort with ambiguity; the ability to make a decision and move forward rather than endlessly debate; and genuine curiosity about how systems fail and how to make them better.

Hiring demand and compensation

There are currently 1,727 active postings for senior software engineers across 358 companies. That's a broad, sustained demand signal. You'll find these roles everywhere—startups, scale-ups, and enterprises all need people who can own systems and raise the bar.

Compensation reflects the market tightness and the leverage the role carries. The median salary is **$185,000** annually. The 25th percentile sits at **$151,475**, and the 75th percentile at **$212,000**. That spread tells you something important: geography, company stage, and domain expertise matter. A senior engineer at a well-funded fintech in San Francisco will earn differently than one at a bootstrapped SaaS company in Austin, even if the technical bar is similar. Equity, signing bonuses, and benefits vary widely too.

The demand is real, but it's not a free pass. Companies are selective about who they promote or hire into these roles. They're looking for people who can operate with less supervision, who don't need to be told what to do, and who actively make the people around them better.

How to get hired

If you're aiming for a senior role, the interview process will test both your technical depth and your judgment. Expect system design interviews—not the toy problems, but realistic scenarios with constraints and trade-offs. You'll discuss how you'd design a service, what could go wrong, and how you'd monitor it. You'll talk about a system you've owned, what went wrong, and what you'd do differently.

Code interviews still happen, but they're usually shorter and less about algorithmic wizardry. They're checking that you can write clean, maintainable code and that you think about edge cases.

The real signal, though, comes from your track record. Have you owned a system end-to-end? Can you point to something you designed that's still running in production? Have you mentored people? Have you made a hard call about architecture and lived with it? Companies want to see evidence of this.

Your resume should tell a story of increasing scope. Don't just list technologies; explain what you owned and why it mattered. "Redesigned the checkout service to reduce p99 latency from 800ms to 120ms, improving conversion by 2%" is more useful than "experienced with microservices."

Network matters too. Many senior roles are filled through referrals. If you know someone at a company, that's a real advantage.

How to hire well

If you're building a team, hiring senior engineers is different from hiring mid-level ones. You're not looking for someone who'll execute a spec; you're looking for someone who'll own a problem space and make your team better.

Be specific about what you need owned. "Senior engineer" is too vague. Do you need someone to rebuild your data pipeline? Own the API layer? Lead infrastructure? The clearer you are, the better candidates you'll attract and the easier it is to assess fit.

Don't over-index on resume keywords. Someone with deep Kubernetes experience but no TypeScript can learn TypeScript. Someone who's never used your exact tech stack but has built three production systems at scale is probably a better bet than someone who's been at one company for five years doing the same thing.

In interviews, dig into decisions they've made. Why did they choose that architecture? What would they do differently? What's a system they've owned that failed, and what did they learn? The best senior engineers are thoughtful about trade-offs and honest about what they don't know.

And be honest about what you're offering. Senior engineers are evaluating you as much as you're evaluating them. If your infrastructure is a mess, your incident response is chaotic, or your team is dysfunctional, they'll figure it out. If you're a place where they can own something meaningful and make an impact, that's your pitch.

The market right now

With 1,727 postings across 358 companies, there's real demand, but it's not unlimited. The market has cooled from the 2021-2022 hiring frenzy, and companies are more disciplined about headcount. That means the bar is higher—you need to be genuinely senior, not just someone with a few years of experience.

For candidates, this is actually good news. It means the roles that are open are real, not panic hires. Companies are investing in senior engineers because they need them, not because they're on a hiring spree. The compensation is solid, and the work is usually meaningful.

For companies, it means you need to move fast and be compelling. Good senior engineers have options. You need to be clear about what you're building, why it matters, and why someone should join your team instead of the other three companies courting them.
