You're not just shipping features—you're responsible for the health and evolution of non-trivial systems. That might mean owning a payment processing pipeline, a real-time data platform, or a critical microservice that hundreds of engineers depend on.
The work breaks into a few overlapping domains. First, there's the technical ownership piece: you design systems with an eye toward scalability, fault tolerance, and operational simplicity. You make calls about whether to build, buy, or refactor. You understand the trade-offs between a quick solution and one that won't collapse under load in six months. Can you reason about consistency models, failure modes, and trade-offs between strong and eventual consistency? Do you understand how to design for observability, not just functionality? Can you estimate capacity, identify bottlenecks, and know when to optimize versus when to leave well enough alone?
The softer skills matter too, though they're harder to list: clear communication, especially in writing; comfort with ambiguity; the ability to make a decision and move forward rather than endlessly debate; and genuine curiosity about how systems fail and how to make them better.

Expect system design interviews—not the toy problems, but realistic scenarios with constraints and trade-offs. You'll discuss how you'd design a service, what could go wrong, and how you'd monitor it. You'll talk about a system you've owned, what went wrong, and what you'd do differently.

If you're building a team, hiring senior engineers is different from hiring mid-level ones. You're not looking for someone who'll execute a spec; you're looking for someone who'll own a problem space and make your team better.
Be specific about what you need owned. "Senior engineer" is too vague. Do you need someone to rebuild your data pipeline? Own the API layer? Lead infrastructure? The clearer you are, the better candidates you'll attract and the easier it is to assess fit.
Don't over-index on resume keywords. Someone with deep Kubernetes experience but no TypeScript can learn TypeScript. Someone who's never used your exact tech stack but has built three production systems at scale is probably a better bet than someone who's been at one company for five years doing the same thing.
In interviews, dig into decisions they've made. Why did they choose that architecture? What would they do differently? What's a system they've owned that failed, and what did they learn? The best senior engineers are thoughtful about trade-offs and honest about what they don't know.
And be honest about what you're offering. Senior engineers are evaluating you as much as you're evaluating them. If your infrastructure is a mess, your incident response is chaotic, or your team is dysfunctional, they'll figure it out. If you're a place where they can own something meaningful and make an impact, that's your pitch.
