About the role

What a Frontend Engineer does

What frontend engineers actually do

Frontend engineering is less about making things "look pretty" and more about translating product requirements into interactive, performant user experiences. A frontend engineer writes the code that runs in browsers and on devices—the buttons users click, the forms they fill, the animations they see, the data they interact with.

Day-to-day work varies by company size and maturity. At a startup, you might own entire features end-to-end: designing the component structure, building the UI, wiring it to backend APIs, and shipping it. At a larger company, you're more likely to specialize—maybe you focus on performance optimization, or you own a specific product surface, or you work on shared component libraries that other teams depend on.

Common tasks include:

- Writing JavaScript/TypeScript to handle user interactions and state management - Building reusable UI components and design systems - Debugging browser compatibility and performance issues - Collaborating with designers to implement mockups and prototypes - Optimizing page load times and runtime performance - Writing tests to catch bugs before they reach users - Reviewing code and mentoring junior engineers

The technical surface area is broad. You need to understand HTML and CSS fundamentals, but you also need to think about application architecture, data flow, caching strategies, and how frontend decisions ripple through the entire product.

Skills that matter

The job title is "frontend engineer," but the core skill is problem-solving with code. The specific technologies change every few years; the ability to learn and adapt doesn't.

**JavaScript/TypeScript proficiency** is table stakes. Most roles expect you to write clean, maintainable code without hand-holding. You should understand async patterns, closures, and how the event loop works—not as trivia, but as tools for debugging real problems.

**Component-driven thinking** has become standard. Whether you're using React, Vue, Angular, or something else, the mental model is the same: break UIs into composable, testable pieces. You need to understand state management, props, and how data flows through a component tree.

**Performance awareness** separates competent engineers from great ones. This means knowing why a page is slow (is it JavaScript? images? network?), how to measure it, and how to fix it. Tools like Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, and profilers are part of your toolkit.

**Collaboration skills** matter more than many engineers expect. You'll work with designers, product managers, backend engineers, and QA. You need to ask good questions, explain tradeoffs clearly, and push back when something doesn't make sense.

**CSS and layout** are often underestimated. Flexbox, Grid, responsive design, and accessibility aren't "nice to have"—they're core to the job. A frontend engineer who can't build a responsive, accessible layout is incomplete.

The market right now

With 42 active postings across 33 companies, frontend engineering remains in steady demand. The median salary of $92,589 reflects a mature, well-established role. The 25th percentile sits at $78,700, while the 75th percentile reaches $109,255—a spread that reflects differences in company size, location, experience level, and specialization.

Startups and growth-stage companies tend toward the lower end of that range but often compensate with equity. Established tech companies and financial services firms cluster toward the median and above. Remote-first companies have compressed geographic salary variation, while companies with physical offices in expensive metros (San Francisco, New York, London) pay premiums.

Experience matters, but so does demonstrated impact. A mid-level engineer who has shipped features users love and optimized performance can command top-of-range compensation. A senior engineer who has built systems that scale and mentored others can exceed the 75th percentile.

How to get hired

Frontend roles are competitive, but the bar is learnable. Here's what actually works:

**Build a portfolio.** The best signal is code you've written that solves real problems. A GitHub profile with a few well-executed projects beats a resume full of buzzwords. Open-source contributions count, but so do personal projects. The bar is "can I understand this code and see how you think?"

**Know the fundamentals deeply.** You don't need to memorize every API, but you should understand how the web works: HTTP, the DOM, the browser rendering pipeline, how JavaScript execution blocks rendering. These concepts appear in every interview and matter in every job.

**Practice the interview format.** Most companies use coding interviews: you'll be asked to build a component, fix a bug, or optimize a page. Practice on platforms like LeetCode or CodeSignal, but also practice explaining your thinking out loud. The code matters, but so does your communication.

**Show you care about users.** Ask about accessibility, performance, and user research during interviews. Mention a time you optimized something or caught a bug that would have hurt users. Companies want engineers who think beyond the code.

**Target the right companies.** Not all frontend roles are created equal. A role at a company that invests in frontend tooling and has a strong design system is different from one where frontend is an afterthought. Read job descriptions carefully; they tell you a lot about the engineering culture.

How to hire well

If you're hiring frontend engineers, the signal-to-noise ratio in resumes is terrible. Here's what actually predicts success:

**Assess problem-solving, not memorization.** A take-home project that mirrors real work ("build a search interface" or "optimize this page") tells you far more than whiteboard trivia. Give candidates time to think and iterate.

**Look for systems thinking.** Ask how they'd approach a performance problem, or how they'd structure a large component. The answer reveals whether they think about tradeoffs and architecture, not just syntax.

**Value communication.** A frontend engineer who can explain a technical decision to a designer or product manager is worth more than one who writes perfect code in isolation. Pair programming or design review conversations are good interview formats.

**Check for growth.** Someone who learned React three years ago and hasn't touched anything since is riskier than someone who's curious about new patterns and tools. Ask what they've learned recently and why.

**Don't over-weight framework experience.** React, Vue, and Angular are tools. A strong engineer can pick up any of them in weeks. Hire for fundamentals and curiosity; framework expertise is a bonus.

What the numbers mean

The median of $92,589 is healthy compensation for a skilled, mid-level engineer in most markets. It's not Silicon Valley peak, but it's solid middle-class income with room to grow. The fact that 42 companies are actively hiring signals that the role isn't commoditized—there's real demand for good frontend engineers.

The spread from $78k to $109k matters. If you're early-career, expect the lower end but negotiate hard if you have a portfolio. If you're mid-level with a track record, you should be aiming for the median or above. If you're senior or specialized (performance, accessibility, design systems), the 75th percentile is realistic.

Remote work has opened up the market. You're no longer competing only with local candidates; you're competing nationally or globally. That's good if you're in a lower-cost area and good if you're exceptional. It's harder if you're in an expensive city but not exceptional.

The path forward

Frontend engineering is a craft. The best engineers treat it that way: they care about performance, accessibility, and user experience. They stay curious about new tools but grounded in fundamentals. They communicate clearly and collaborate well.

If you're considering the role, ask yourself: do you enjoy solving problems with code? Do you care about how things work and how they feel? Can you balance shipping fast with building well? If yes, it's a role with real demand, solid compensation, and genuine room to grow.
