The template

Account executives interview for a living, so polish alone tells you little. The questions below are designed to separate genuine sellers from good storytellers: they ask for specific deals, real numbers, and losses as well as wins. Pick 10-12 for a round at {{Company name}}, keep the set identical across candidates, and press for named specifics β€” quota figures, deal sizes, sales cycles β€” scored against the guidance notes.

Discovery and qualification

  • Walk me through your discovery call structure. What must you know before you agree to a demo?
  • Role-play: I am a prospect who says we already have a solution for this. Run two minutes of discovery on me.
  • How do you uncover pain the prospect has not articulated to themselves yet?
  • Which qualification framework do you use, and where do you deviate from it?
  • Tell me about a deal you disqualified early that your manager wanted you to work. What did you see?
  • How do you find the economic buyer when your champion is two levels below them?

What good looks like: strong candidates ask layered, open questions in the role-play β€” situation, impact, cost of inaction β€” and listen more than they pitch. Off script, they should describe walking away from bad-fit deals with specific disqualification criteria; sellers who claim they qualify everything in are the ones who miss forecast later.

Pipeline generation and management

  • What percentage of your pipeline did you self-source versus receive from marketing or SDRs?
  • Walk me through your personal prospecting rhythm β€” channels, volume, and conversion at each step.
  • Your pipeline is at 2x coverage with six weeks left in the quarter. What do you do this week?
  • How do you revive a deal that has gone dark for a month?
  • Tell me about the best outbound message you ever wrote. Why did it work?

Demos and value selling

  • How do you prepare a demo for an audience with mixed roles β€” end user, manager, and finance?
  • Tell me about a deal you won against a cheaper competitor. What was the argument that landed?
  • How do you translate a feature list into a business case with numbers a CFO accepts?
  • Describe a demo that went badly. What did you do in the room?
  • How do you co-build a business case with a champion so they can sell internally without you?

Negotiation and closing

  • Walk me through your last significant negotiation: opening positions, concessions, and where it closed.
  • The prospect asks for {{Discount percentage}} off on the last day of the quarter. What is your exact response?
  • How do you trade concessions instead of giving them away β€” what do you ask for in return?
  • Tell me about a deal that stalled in legal or procurement. How did you get it moving?
  • What closing techniques do you refuse to use, and why?
  • Describe a deal you lost at the final stage. What was the real reason?

What good looks like: the best answers show planned negotiations β€” a walk-away point, a concession ladder, and trades tied to commitments like timing, term length, or references. Listen for composure in the discount question: strong candidates defend value and redirect to the business case instead of folding or calling the manager.

Forecasting and process discipline

  • What was your quota for the last three years, and what did you finish at each year?
  • How do you categorize deals for forecast, and how accurate was your commit last year?
  • What does your CRM hygiene actually look like β€” what do you log the same day?
  • Tell me about a quarter you missed. When did you know, and who did you tell?

Resilience and coachability

  • Tell me about the toughest stretch of your sales career. What kept you going?
  • What is the most valuable piece of coaching you have received, and what changed after?
  • How do you rebuild momentum after losing a deal you worked for six months?
  • What part of your selling are you actively working on right now?
