The difference between a strong and weak engineer is mostly visible under pressure. A weak one wires up infrastructure by hand, leaves pipelines flaky, and treats monitoring as an afterthought — so outages become mysteries. A strong one automates relentlessly, makes infrastructure reproducible and reviewable, designs for failure (rollbacks, health checks, blast-radius limits), and builds observability before it's needed. The senior differentiators are networking and security fluency, an understanding of distributed-systems failure modes, and genuine cost awareness. Real depth shows in how someone reasons about tradeoffs, not in how many tools they can name.
