Qué hace un Software Engineer

What software engineers actually do

Software engineers translate product ideas into working code. On any given day, this means writing backend services that handle millions of requests, designing APIs that other teams depend on, building user-facing features, or debugging why a production system is slow. The work spans the full stack—from database queries in PostgreSQL to containerized services running on Kubernetes to frontend logic in TypeScript.

The role is fundamentally about shipping. Engineers don't just write code in isolation; they design systems that need to work reliably at scale, write tests that catch bugs before they reach users, review teammates' code, and own the systems they build through deployment and on-call rotations. This means understanding not just how to build something, but how to keep it running.

Collaboration is built into the job. Engineers work closely with product managers to understand what users need, with designers to implement interfaces, and with data teams to instrument systems for observability. The best engineers can translate a vague product requirement into a concrete technical plan, then execute it while keeping the broader system in mind.

The skills that matter

The most common languages in software engineering job postings are TypeScript, Python, and Go. TypeScript dominates frontend and full-stack roles; Python is the default for backend services and data work; Go is increasingly common for infrastructure and high-performance services. Most engineers work in at least two languages over their career.

Beyond language syntax, the skills that separate strong engineers from the rest are:

**Systems thinking.** Understanding how databases, caches, queues, and services interact. Why a query is slow. How to design an API that won't need a breaking change in six months. This comes partly from experience and partly from reading other people's code.

**Testing discipline.** Writing tests isn't optional—it's how engineers prevent regressions and sleep at night. Unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests all have a place. Engineers who think about testability while designing code ship faster and with fewer bugs.

**Production mindset.** Code that works in development is only half the job. Engineers need to think about observability (logging, metrics, tracing), error handling, and graceful degradation. This is why Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS appear so frequently in job postings—they're the tools that make production systems manageable.

**Git and code review.** Version control isn't just a tool; it's how teams coordinate. Engineers who write clear commit messages, keep changes focused, and give thoughtful code reviews make their entire team more effective.

Postgres appears in the majority of engineering roles because relational databases are still the backbone of most systems. Engineers don't need to be DBAs, but understanding indexes, query plans, and data modeling is table stakes.

The market right now

With 1,805 active postings across 523 companies, software engineering remains one of tech's most competitive hiring markets. The breadth of companies posting—from early-stage startups to Fortune 500s—means there's genuine demand across the industry, not just concentrated in a few hot sectors.

Median compensation sits at $180,000 annually. The 25th percentile is $128,500, which typically reflects junior engineers, smaller companies, or lower cost-of-living markets. The 75th percentile reaches $237,500, common for senior engineers, specialized roles, or high-paying tech hubs. Total compensation often includes equity and bonuses that can add 20-40% to base salary, particularly at growth-stage companies.

The gap between p25 and p75 is substantial—nearly $110,000—which reflects real variation in the market. Geography, company stage, specialization, and experience all matter. An engineer building infrastructure at a well-funded startup in San Francisco will earn differently than one building internal tools at a regional company. Both are legitimate paths.

Getting hired as a software engineer

The hiring process typically involves a phone screen, a technical interview (usually coding), and a systems design conversation for senior roles. The best preparation is straightforward: build things, read code, and practice explaining your thinking.

Building projects matters more than credentials. A portfolio of real work—even small projects on GitHub—demonstrates that you can ship. Interviewers care less about where you went to school and more about whether you can reason through a problem, write clean code, and ask good questions when you're stuck.

For the technical interview, focus on fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and the ability to write code that actually works. Most companies aren't looking for the cleverest solution; they want to see how you think. Talk through your approach, consider edge cases, and be willing to iterate.

For senior roles, system design interviews assess whether you can think about scale, trade-offs, and operational concerns. You don't need to have built Netflix; you need to understand why certain architectural choices matter and when to make them.

Beyond the interview, the strongest candidates have:

- **Concrete examples** of systems they've built or improved, with numbers ("reduced latency by 40%", "handled 10x traffic growth") - **Curiosity about how things work.** Engineers who read production logs, understand their company's infrastructure, and ask why things are designed a certain way stand out - **Communication skills.** The ability to explain technical concepts clearly, both to other engineers and to non-technical stakeholders

Hiring software engineers well

For companies, the challenge is that 523 organizations are competing for the same talent. The strongest hiring practices focus on signal over process.

Be specific about what you actually need. "Senior full-stack engineer" is too vague. Do you need someone who can own a backend service end-to-end? Someone who can build a performant frontend? Someone who can design infrastructure? Different skills, different candidates.

Evaluate on work, not credentials. A candidate who has shipped production code—even at a small company—often outperforms someone with a prestigious degree but no real experience. Look at what they've actually built.

Move fast. The best candidates have multiple offers. A slow hiring process (more than 2-3 weeks from first conversation to offer) costs you talent. Async communication and focused interviews help.

Be honest about the role. If you need someone on-call, say so. If the codebase is legacy, say so. If you're a startup with uncertain funding, say so. Transparency attracts people who actually want the job, not just any job.

Compensation matters, but so does the work. Engineers will take less money for the chance to work on hard problems, learn from strong teammates, or build something they believe in. But you can't compete on mission alone—pay fairly for the market and role.

Why this role exists

Software engineering is foundational because every modern product is software. The role has remained in high demand for two decades because the work is genuinely hard and genuinely valuable. The 1,805 open positions reflect real business need, not hype.

The compensation range—$128k to $237k at the quartiles—reflects the market's assessment of value. Engineers who can ship reliable systems at scale are expensive because they're worth it. The variation also reflects that there's no single "software engineer" role; the title spans junior developers, specialists, and architects, each with different market values.

For candidates, this is a role where skill and execution matter more than pedigree. For companies, it's a role where hiring well is genuinely competitive—but the payoff is enormous.
