UX/UI designers shape both how a product works and how it looks, turning user needs into interfaces people can actually use. The strongest ones back visual craft with research and a systems mindset.

Post a role →The UX/UI title pairs two related but distinct disciplines. UX (user experience) is about how a product works: who the users are, what they're trying to accomplish, the flows and information architecture that get them there. UI (user interface) is about how it looks and feels: layout, typography, color, spacing, states, and the visual craft that makes a product feel trustworthy and polished. In most roles, especially at smaller companies, one person owns both — moving from research and flows to pixel-perfect screens.
The difference between strong and weak is the difference between decoration and design. A weak UX/UI designer produces pretty screens that look good in a portfolio but ignore real user needs, edge cases, empty states, and accessibility. They can't explain why a decision was made beyond personal taste. A strong designer starts from the problem and the user, justifies choices with research or established heuristics, designs the unglamorous states (errors, loading, empty, dense data), and thinks in systems so the product stays consistent as it grows. They also collaborate well with engineers, designing within real constraints rather than over the wall.
Figma is the industry standard for interface design, prototyping, and design systems, so deep fluency there is expected. Beyond the tool, the skills that matter are user research and usability testing, information architecture and flow design, interaction and visual design fundamentals, and building reusable component libraries. Accessibility (WCAG awareness, color contrast, keyboard and screen-reader considerations) increasingly separates professionals from hobbyists, as does the ability to communicate and defend design decisions clearly.
The skills assessment looks past a polished portfolio to evaluate design thinking: how a candidate frames a problem, structures a flow, handles edge cases and accessibility, and reasons about visual and interaction choices. Hirers get a verified signal of judgment, not just taste — which is hard to read from screenshots alone. For designers, it's a way to demonstrate the reasoning behind the work, the part that predicts whether you can solve real product problems rather than just style them.
