Post a role →Web developer is a broad title covering everyone from someone hand-building marketing sites to full-stack engineers shipping complex applications. At its core, the role is about turning designs and requirements into working web pages and apps: structuring content with semantic HTML, styling responsively with CSS, adding behavior with JavaScript, and connecting to data and services on the back end. Because the title is broad, the specifics vary — some lean front-end, some full-stack, some specialize in a CMS or e-commerce platform.
The difference between strong and weak shows up in the fundamentals, not the framework of the month. A weak web developer leans entirely on a framework or page builder and falls apart when something breaks underneath it — a layout bug, an accessibility failure, a slow page they can't diagnose. A strong one understands how the browser actually works: the box model, the cascade, the event loop, how requests flow, and why a page is slow. They write semantic, accessible markup by default, keep JavaScript lean, and reach for a framework when it earns its place rather than by reflex.
The durable core is HTML, CSS, and JavaScript done well — including responsive layout, flexbox and grid, and accessibility. From there, most roles expect a modern framework (React is the most common, with Vue, Svelte, or a meta-framework like Next.js close behind), version control with Git, and comfort consuming APIs. Performance literacy (Core Web Vitals, bundle size, caching) and SEO basics increasingly separate generalists who can be trusted with a whole site from those who only assemble components.
Because web developer covers so much ground, the skills assessment focuses on transferable fundamentals: HTML and CSS correctness, JavaScript reasoning, responsive and accessible layout, and the judgment to keep things simple. Hirers get a verified signal that filters past resume keyword soup to actual ability. For someone entering or leveling up in the field, it's a concrete way to prove that the fundamentals are solid — the part that predicts whether you can be handed a real project and deliver.
