The template

{{Company name}} is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction across multiple teams without leaving the code behind. You will take on our hardest, most ambiguous engineering problems, shape architecture that outlives any single project, and make every team you touch measurably better. This is a senior individual-contributor role — influence comes from judgment and delivery, not from direct reports.

What you'll do

  • Own technical strategy for a broad product or platform area spanning several teams
  • Lead the design of systems where the requirements are unclear and the stakes are high
  • Write and review architecture proposals, and build alignment across engineering leads
  • Untangle the gnarliest incidents and performance problems, then fix the class of issue, not just the instance
  • Identify and pay down the architectural debt that slows the whole organization
  • Mentor senior engineers and raise the design-review bar company-wide
  • Advise engineering and product leadership on build-vs-buy, sequencing, and risk
  • Prototype and prove out high-leverage technical bets before teams commit to them

What we're looking for

  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including years operating beyond a single team's scope
  • A track record of designing systems that scaled — in traffic, in data, and in contributor count
  • Deep expertise in at least one domain (distributed systems, data platforms, frontend architecture, or similar)
  • Evidence of technical influence without authority: RFCs adopted, standards set, teams unblocked
  • Judgment about when to be pragmatic and when to hold the line on quality
  • Writing that makes complex trade-offs legible to both engineers and executives

Nice to have

  • Experience guiding platform migrations or large refactors to completion
  • Prior tech-lead or engineering-management experience (and a deliberate return to IC work)
  • Public speaking, writing, or open-source leadership
  • Familiarity with {{Industry or domain}}

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary: {{Salary range}}
  • Benefits: {{Benefits summary}}
  • Location: {{Location / remote policy}}

How to apply

{{Application instructions}} In your application, point us to one system or decision you drove and what you would do differently now. If you don't tick every box but believe you can do this job well, we still want to hear from you.
